Helpful Tips

Regalia

Dual Degree Program Graduates

If you will receive BOTH a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the same time, you should order both sets of regalia.  Place two separate orders.

Accessories

Graduates are required to wear academic regalia while participating in the Commencement ceremony. In addition to the cap, gown, and hood students may wear the following:

  • items of cultural significance;
  • accessories earned for academic distinction; or
  • accessories provided by the College for participation in clubs, organizations, athletics teams, or other affiliated activities.

Common accessories include medals, cords, sashes, stoles, and pins. All decorations and accessories must align with Marist community standards.

Herff Jones doesn’t supply gown accessories, such as cords, sashes, stoles, and pins. If you think you may be eligible for an accessory through participation in the Honors Program, study abroad, an honor society, or for other reasons, please reach out to that department directly.

How to Properly Wear Regalia

To see how to wear your regalia properly, watch this tutorial video.

Cords, Tassels, and Other Attire

  • Your tassel should be worn on the right until all graduates have crossed the stage and President Weinman confers all degrees.
  • Remember the ground and stage can get wet, even if it’s not raining. Please wear sensible shoes.
  • The weather can be unpredictable, so remember both your umbrella and your sunblock.
  • Graduates should be cautious of the clothes they wear underneath their gowns. Neither the College nor the manufacturer guarantees that they are colorfast.
